Day 3 of the People’s Postal Summit

Day Three of the People’s Postal Summit focused on how we can leverage the unique position of the U.S. Postal Service to secure the future of our democracy, protect our civil rights, as well as to achieve environmental sustainability and vibrant communities.

Last year, the heroic work of postal workers saved our democracy, providing access to the ballot for more than 60 million voters. On yesterday’s first panel were Hilary Shelton, the Director of the Washington Bureau of the NAACP, Jennifer Lamson, Interim Executive Director of the Democracy Initiative and Melanie Campbell, President and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation. The group looked at the future of the Postal Service and our democratic rights, including and beyond vote-by-mail.

Our second panel looked at how our People’s Postal Agenda can fit into the struggles for climate justice with a just transition and how the postal network can better serve our communities in many different ways. Annie Leonard, Executive Director of Greenpeace USA, Andrew Butcher, Director of Innovation and Resilience for the Greater Portland Council of Governments in Maine and Neha Desaraju, an organizer with the Sunrise Movement made up the second panel.
