Rep. Adams to attend postal service hearing Wednesday in Greensboro

U.S. Rep. Alma Adams, a Charlotte Democrat, will participate in a field hearing Wednesday about the future of the postal service in the city and surrounding communities.

The hearing will be 6 to 8 p.m. at the International Civil Rights Museum at 134 S. Elm St. Participants will include civic leaders and concerned residents.

It is one of five hearings being held across the country organized by A Grand Alliance to Save Our Public Postal Service, a coalition of more than 130 civil rights, faith-based, environmental, senior citizen, civic and labor organizations.

The discussion will center on the need for new and expanded postal services in the area including the potential for postal banking, the coalition said in a news release.

In addition to Adams, other participants include:

  • Greensboro Councilwoman Sharon Hightower;
  • Viola Fuller, first vice president of the Greensboro NAACP;
  • Andrew Brod, senior research fellow, UNC-Greensboro Bryant School of Business and Economics;
  • Philip Rubio, associate professor at N.C. A&T;
  • Larry Morse, retired professor, N.C. A&T;
  • Michael Young, United for a Fair Economy;
  • John Jones, president, Renaissance Community Co-op;
  • Dr. T. Anthony Spearman, pastor, St. Philip AME Zion Church;
  • Fred Erwin, Greensboro firefighter;
  • Richard Koritz, board member, International Civil Rights Center & Museum, and organizer, Grand Alliance, Greensboro; and
  • John Swaine, chief executive officer, International Civil Rights Center & Museum.
